Intramurals

The intramural program will run throughout the noon hours (Tuesday to Thursday) during the week. As a student, you will be offered a variety of sports leagues to enter throughout the year. We will also have some novelty events offered throughout the year, where students can drop in and have some fun.

Athletics

If you have general questions about Athletics at SJAM please contact our Learning Leader, Mr. Jones at sdjones@cbe.ab.ca

School athletics are an exciting part of our school culture. Students of any age and skill level are encouraged to try out and participate. School athletic teams vary depending on available staff for coaching and might include: volleyball, soccer, cross-country running, wrestling, basketball, badminton, and track and field. Each of our coaches are volunteers - the time they donate is valued and appreciated. We thank families for extending gratitude and support throughout the season, while responding in socially appropriate ways should concerns arise.

At SJAM, we embrace the concept of a 'student-athlete'. School must come first! In order to be eligible to participate in our Athletics program, the following expectations exist:

During tryouts, prospective student-athletes must:

  • Attend every tryout session.
  • Punctuality: Be on time for the tryout. and be changed into PE appropriate clothing (e.g. shorts, sneakers, t-shirt)
  • Communicate. If the student-athlete is absent for illness or essential appointments, the student must email the coaches, and copy their parents, before the tryout session. Coaches have a short window of time to select the team - being absent provides fewer opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills and may impact their position or ability to make the team.
  • Have a positive attitude. A student with a growth mindset is more likely to make a team than a skilled athlete, especially in junior high. The student should be 'coachable', open to positive feedback, and demonstrate the team comes before the individual through sportsmanship, leadership and cooperation.

Once a student-athlete makes a team, the following is expected:

  • The student-athlete is a model citizen demonstrating they support a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment at school and during their free time.
  • Social media use must be exemplary - please see above.
  • Team fees paid in full - parents are encouraged to speak to Admin about a payment plan, if needed.
  • Perfect attendance (full attendance, no unexcused lates) is a requirement on game days. If an excused absence is needed, parents can phone the attendance line before noon.
  • Attendance at ALL practices (must email coaches when there is illness or appointment) - missing practices may result in less playing time
  • Dedication to learning tasks in the classroom: some coaches will ask for weekly feedback from your teachers.

Suggestion: student-athletes are encouraged to consider attending summer camps or Club opportunities in order to improve their athletic skills. It is challenging to make sports teams in junior and senior high. These can be expensive - students can consider engaging in casual part time opportunities supporting neighbors (shoveling snow, raking grass etc.) throughout the year to help offset these expenses for families.

If you have questions about a sport, please email the coaches
